Blue Dot Climate Insurance provides insurance that helps avoid climate change:

  • Brownfield cleanups: Cost Cap insurance is again commercially available from at least one insurer (Markel). As with AIG’s and others pre-2011 Cost Cap Policies, Markel’s covers pollutants known of at policy inception and discovered in the course of remediating the knowns. Blue Dot’s Principals have obtained and applied Cost Cap protections since 1998 — using non-traditional alternatives (e.g., escrows, captives) in the decade between the commercially-available options — and with Markel’s entry, Blue Dot can again help clients obtain Cost Caps from a commercial insurer.

  • Wetlands: Insurance to support carbon credits associated with the protection of carbon-sequestering wetlands, without violating what’s known as the Miscellaneous Receipts Act … violations that the U.S. Army Corps (the nation’s lead wetlands regulator) has found inherent in other policies.

For coverage that extends beyond 10 years or is otherwise not commercially available, Blue Dot Principals have used captive insurance and escrows to accomplish cleanups with combined redevelopment of over $2B.

Our name comes from the iconic photo of Earth, described by Carl Sagan as a Pale Blue Dot and underscoring our responsibility “to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.” We try to meet this responsibility through fair dealing in all that we do.
